New models of charging for open access publishing are starting to appear. One of these is Cogent open access who offer rapid publication, expert editors (including our own Richard Johnston) and a “pay what you want” model of funding, allowing those without institutional funding to pay less.

The Directory of Open Access Journals contains other options for open access publishing. There is some quality checking on the journals contained in the directory but it is always wise to check out a new journal – for example do you know anyone who has published in it? What do you know about the publisher? Is it indexed by major indexing services?
